Rhode Island

There are numerous drug and alcohol treatment centers available in Rhode Island.  If you or a loved one needs help with an addiction issue, please talk to your doctor or physician.  You may be surprised to discover that there are local programs available where you can talk to an intervention specialist and gain a better understanding of addiction issues and how to approach treatment.

One of the things to consider is what kind of treatment your health insurance covers.  Call your health insurance provider and talk to them about rehab treatment and find out what their coverage is for out-patient and in-patient drug treatment.  This is important because most insurance providers have centers that they have approved for services.  Since treatment can be an expensive prospect, it is important to have this information before starting treatment.

Out-patient programs are really geared toward people who have drug or alcohol dependence issues.  Dependence is different from addiction.  Dependence is occasional, but not compulsive daily, use of a drug or alcohol.  Individuals struggling with dependence often seek help because they realize that using alcohol or drugs may be interfering with their lives or having a negative impact on their ability to function.  For example, a person who smokes marijuana on the weekends, may come to realize that the money they are spending on marijuana is actually preventing them from paying other important bills or meeting other responsibilities.  Group and individual drug counseling sessions help these individuals learn healthier alternatives to their drug or alcohol use.

In-patient rehab, on the other hand, is really geared toward individuals with addiction issues.  Addiction is a much more pervasive problem.  In addiction, the person’s body has adapted to the presence of the drug or alcohol to the point where the body actually needs the drug to function.  This person has developed a tolerance and needs to use more and more of the drug to be able to feel the effects of the drug.  This can be very dangerous.  In-patient programs deal with this problem through the detoxification process, where specially trained medical personnel are available to help the patient as their body readjusts to not having the drug or alcohol.  In addition to detox, in-patient programs include daily group and individual drug counseling sessions.  Very often the person’s family is encouraged to visit and participate in the recovery process.

In Rhode Island, both in-patient and out-patient treatment programs are readily available to help individuals who are struggling with dependence and addiction issues.  Talk to your doctor to find out what your treatment options are in your area.
